Myra Murphy, Founder (Emeritus)
The tax service represents a fusion of my arts and business background. I am a New York City native and a classically trained musician who holds a master’s degree from the Juilliard School of Music. I developed a lifelong passion for jazz, performing at many renowned venues including Lincoln Center, and taught in many colleges and universities.
When I first started making money as an artist, I tried the well-known tax programs such as H&R Block, finding out they did not fully understand and list the many different expenses I was incurring.
I became interested in learning more about taxes and became an Internal Revenue Services (IRS) Taxpayer Service Representative, working for the IRS in Philadelphia and then in New York City (Manhattan). In my work, I dealt with taxes of celebrities and performers, and learned that even famous bands with large accounting firms were only given the most obvious expenses to deduct, instead of getting good advice for their needs.
Through these personal experiences, I saw a need for a tax service for people who spend their time, energy, and money to create great art and music for the public. The name “Tax Service for Overwhelmed Artists” just made sense – most creative people don’t want to deal with pages of tax rules, numbers, or calculations.
The business started up in New York and expanded to include clients across the country, helping artists, who have so many legal deductions from expenses in their work.
